The rescue attempt...

When Duke saw that his friend was in trouble, he jumped into action...slowly. Even though he didn't quite rescue the little one, it's the thought that counts. (No yellow toys were hurt in this incident. There was a trained pool attendee who safely returned the ball to dry land.)

Looks can be deceiving...

Even though it was a bit overcast & gloomy, the picture doesn't quite describe the humidity of the day. It was so bad that Duke & Eddie had to find relief by soaking their sweaty paws in the pool. =)

His own swimming style...

Maybe Duke's not as suave and graceful as Eddie, but I gotta admit he's pretty enthusiastic about it. Duke just thinks too much about staying above the water & doesn't relax to let his body just float. He hasn't gotten to the stage that Eddie's in, where he can just enjoy the feeling of water flowing thru his fur. He freaks out a little bit when he looses sight of his ball. But don't worry, I made sure that he witnessed the rescue of the little yellow one. All was well after I reunited the 2.

How the weather affects your mood...

Eddie looking a little pissed off. Maybe the heat is getting to him. (V puttin' in his 5 cents)

Duke's silly games...

Playing fetch with himself.
Step1: Balance ball on edge of pool, using paws to keep it in place.
Step2: Twitch front left paw until ball drops into the water.
Step3: Look at ball for a few minutes, making sure it's in the water.
Step4: Quickly retrieve it, making sure not to fall in.
Step5: Repeat steps 1 thru 4 as much as you possibly can whenever your parents are in the backyard in order to get the maximum amount of attention.

Maybe he's part retriever...

We found out that Eddie really does like to play fetch! And he's pretty good at it. But there's only one condition...it only works when he's in the water. I think it's because he doesn't have the psycho, obsessive-compulsive, freak-out-if-you-touch-my-ball dog, who I won't name names, to push him out of the way.

Notice how, and to keep him annonymous, I'll just call him...."Luke", is standing at the steps waiting to take the ball away from Eddie. You can just see the anger & frustration in his face & how he can't believe that this is actually happening.

How to keep cool on hot & humid days like this...

Plenty helpings of fresh, iced water.

Out of reach...

Duke was trying so hard to keep his toy from getting into Eddie's grips. Eddie could have cared less about the thing, his mind was focused on getting to the deep end.

Testing out the waters...

To see if they are truly compatible.

The dog days of summer...

Eddie & his new summer hobby.

Hunting...

For his beloved ball, of course! Duke was still trying to figure out where he saw it last.

Tree cutting day...

When we had our trees chopped down, I had to put the dogs in the garage while the guys were working in the back yard. Seemed like Eddie didn't like all the loud noises too much, cause he couldn't sit still. I think the high pitch noises of the chainsaw hurt his ears & gave him anxiety. And Duke? He just had this look of "So...when are you giving me my ball back?".

Trying to lure Duke into the pool...

By the only way we knew how. If he didn't go into the pool knowing that Eddie would forever get free time with HIS precious ball, then nothing in this world would make him walk into the pool by his own 4 paws. Even though the site of his lovely ball being held by another mouth drove Duke nuts, he still didn't go into the water. We give up on his career in swimming.

So happy he can burst!

Eddie just loves being in the water when everyone's around. We don't even have to call him in anymore, he'll just go in on his own when he feels like it. Sometimes we'll just be swimming & all of a sudden we'll feel a scrape on our back or something brushing up beside us. We'll turn around & find Eddie right in our face just swimming like crazy from the shallow end of the pool to the deep end. It cracks us up every time.

Don't touch it! It's mine!

Duke being his possessive self. I think he was absent the day they were giving out the "learn to share" gene.

In the shadows...

Trying to stay cool on any spot that the sun doesn't touch.

Saturday, July 15, 2006

Moved to a better location...

Eddie thought the location near the window wasn't good enough.

Paparazzi...

"Why are you always taking pictures of me? Geez! I can't lay in the shade & escape the heat in peace like a normal dog?!"

Thursday, July 13, 2006

Just another boring day...

Nothing exciting going on here. Not even anything remotely interesting enough to step foot outside of the house.

Wednesday, July 12, 2006

Like tree stumps growing out of the ground...

Eddie must have the thickest whiskers I've ever seen on a dog before.

Falling to pieces because of you...

Duke gives his toys so much love that sometimes they just can't take it anymore.

(Note : This one is not the Elroy ball, fortunately he's still okay...for now)

The perfect spot...

Eddie enjoying the cool grass in the shade from the EZ-up.

Duke's competition...

Hoping he can get it before the duck can.

French fry fun...

We like to keep the dog's coordination up to par, so we occasionally toss food for them to catch. I also like to take pictures of their expressions while they do that. Duke has great catching abilities & can time it perfectly. Eddie? Not so much. It seems that he just doesn't know what to do & misses the food comepletely or flinches when the food hits him in the face. We think he should just stick to swimming.

My name is Duke...

And I am a ballaholic.

Walking on water...

I covered the pool when the tree guys came on Friday, but Eddie must have thought the tarp had perfect walking conditions. He decided to take a shorcut to the other side of the pool & I'm sure it must have surprised him when the floor fell out from under him. Luckily, I was right next to him when it happened, so I helped him get out. Now the tarp was carrying water and we had a happy, half-wet dog walking around.
